William C. "Bill" Knott

William C. “Bill” Knott died peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on January 26, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonide Clayton Knott and Charles L. Knott, and his brother Charles Lewis Knott, Jr. He is survived by his beloved wife, Else Breitstadt Knott, his two children, William C. Knott, Jr. and Stefanie Ryan Knott, and his sister, Margaret Knott Harrison. Bill was born, raised and spent the vast majority of his life in Dinwiddie, Virginia. He attended Dinwiddie Public Schools and the University of Richmond. He served in the Army from 1958 to 1961, spending two years in Germany where he met his lovely bride. He held jobs in both the public and private sector, working as a loan officer fresh out of the Army, then as County Administrator of Dinwiddie County from 1970 to 1987, and finally as an insurance agent from 1988 to 2007. Bill loved everything about Dinwiddie and was heavily involved in the community. He was a member and past Commander of The American Legion, Dinwiddie Post 149, worshipped and taught Sunday school at Lebanon United Methodist Church, was a member of the Dinwiddie Ruritan Club, and was the voice of Dinwiddie General’s Football for over 50 years. Bill was an avid gardener throughout his life. For many years he would have a very large garden and take his harvest around to the elderly and others in the community so they could have fresh vegetables and conversation. Finally, Bill was a self described sports fanatic and always rooted for Dinwiddie High School Athletics, Richmond Spiders Athletics, Washington Football Team football, and Detroit Tigers baseball. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Southlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The American Legion, Dinwiddie Post 149 or Lebanon United Methodist Church. Services by Williams Funeral Home & Crematory of Lawrenceville, VA.
