Steven Bernard Hawthorne

Steven Bernard Hawthorne, age 72, of Alberta, VA, passed away Thursday, October 29, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Bragg and Lena Lorraine Johnson Hawthorne; and a brother, W.B. Hawthorne.

Steve maintained a lifelong interest in aviation. He made a career first as an A&P mechanic and later as a corporate pilot, never losing his enthusiasm for flight. He also had a passion for sailing, which he shared with his family. An avid reader, he enjoyed books on a wide range of subjects. His interests and pursuits reflected his independent nature.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Katherine Cheely Hawthorne; his children, Daniel Steven Hawthorne and wife, Laurie, and Jenny Lynch and husband, Charles; grandchildren, Abel, Atlas, Leo, Rhone, and Claire; and a brother, Burnell Bragg Hawthorne.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 3, 2026 at New Hope Christian Church Cemetery, Danieltown, VA. The family will receive friends in the church following the service.
