With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Scott Hamilton Avery, who left this life on June 8, 2025, at the age of 53. Born on March 22, 1972 in Petersburg, Virginia, Scott was the beloved son of the late Annette Bailey Avery and Francis Hamilton Avery. Growing up in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, he was forever curious and full of adventure, always taking things apart to learn how they work, riding dirt bikes, and throwing himself into living life full-throttle.
After the passing of his parents, Thomas and Susan Bailey assumed legal guardianship and moved Scott to Vienna, Virginia, where he was taken in as a son and loved by the whole family. He was well known for his success in athletics at James Madison High School, earning the nickname The Human Muscle. He went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Tech, and built a very successful career supporting the US Government using his self-taught skills in technology and networking.
Scott is survived by his sister, Pamela Avery Chumney, and was preceded in death by his two brothers, Frank and Jamie Avery. He is lovingly remembered by his devoted aunts, uncles and cousins, who all have considered him a son and sibling, and will treasure the lifetime of unforgettable memories with him.
A man who lived for friendship and adventure, Scott found happiness in spending time with his family of close friends that he cultivated throughout life. He was known for his generosity, loyalty and playful mischief. He lived with integrity and heart, and his absence will be deeply felt.
A graveside remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2025 at Blandford Cemetery, 319 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, VA 23803.
Donations may be made in Scott’s honor to Hands & Voices. While Scott’s life was not defined by his hearing loss, working towards ensuring children who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing have every opportunity to achieve their full potential would be a mission close to his heart.
His journey here has ended, but the love he gave and the memories he leaves behind will continue to live on.
