Ricky Van Cheely

October 6, 1955 — November 2, 2025

Ricky Van Cheely, age 70, a resident of Warfield and Chesterfield County, VA, passed away Sunday, November 2, 2025.

Born in Lawrenceville, VA, he was the son of the late R.M. Cheely, Jr. and Jean Lewis Cheely. He was also preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ross Miles.

He is survived by his wife, Nita Cheely; his children, Nicole Lewis (Sam), Danielle Cheely, and Russ Cheely (Erin); grandchildren, Reid, Rylan, Noah, Layla, McKenzie, Allyssa (Ray), D.J., and Samantha; great grandchildren, Liam, Lainey, and Tatum; his brother, Bobby Cheely (Duke); and sister, Cheryl Howerton (Johnnie), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

For the last 40 years, he lived life to the fullest with his beloved wife Nita. From trips, ball games and family functions, they were always together and alongside them was their beloved dog Sparkle.

Ricky retired from Philip Morris after almost 40 years. When he wasn’t at work, he dedicated over 20 years to coaching basketball at Brunswick Academy, leading both the girls’ and boys’ teams with passion and commitment. He enjoyed running into them from time to time remembering the good old days and was always so proud of their accomplishments in life.

He was also an avid member of Kress Hill Hunt Club. He looked forward to hanging out with the guys, bringing laughter and camaraderie wherever he went. More importantly, he enjoyed taking his grandchildren hunting every chance he got.

Ricky’s love for family was unwavering and by far his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren. Ricky rarely missed a game and could always be found on the sidelines, cheering loudly and offering words of wisdom. His presence was felt at every event, and his support never wavered.

Ricky’s legacy is one of love, devotion, and community—a life well-lived and deeply cherished by all who knew him.
