Nancy Alice Walthall Avery, age 93, of Alberta, VA died peacefully on June 28, 2023, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. She was born on March 8, 1930, at Benevento Plantation in Alberta, VA to the late Edward Branch Walthall and Mary Kelly Walthall. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Edward K. Avery. She is survived by her three children: her two sons, Joseph W.
Avery and wife Ann; John E. Avery and wife Mary; and her daughter, Mary Alice Adams and husband Mike; her eight
grandchildren, Edward D. Avery and wife Caroline, William S. Avery and wife Lizzie, Elizabeth A. Avery, Patrick H. Avery and wife Annie, Margaret (Maggie) A. Avery, John (Jack) K. Avery, Meredith K. Adams, and Mitchell W. Adams; two great grandchildren, Adley R. Avery and Margaret (Margot) M. Avery; her sister, Mary Marble Jones and husband Dr. S. B. Jones, Sr., and her brother Edward Branch Walthall, Jr. and wife Gayle, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Nancy lived an active and fulfilled life enjoying gardening and knitting, but her greatest love was being with her family. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she was blessed recently with the addition of two great granddaughters. Nancy graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Reading. Nancy was an elementary school teacher for 33 1/2 years. She began her teaching career in Arlington County where she taught for three years. After moving back home to Alberta, she resumed her teaching career in Brunswick County for thirty years until she retired. She was listed in Who’s Who Among Outstanding Teachers and was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, DAR, and Colonial Dames XVII. Nancy enjoyed being a member of the Brunswick Garden Club, Alberta Book Club, and her bridge club. She also enjoyed being on the Fort Christanna Planning Committee. Nancy was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist church in Alberta, VA, where she served on many committees and sang in the choir. The family would like to express their greatest appreciation to Home Instead Senior Care and Mary Washington Hospice for the comforting care and support they gave to Nancy. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Bethel United Methodist Church, Alberta, VA with interment at Bethel Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Red Oak Hall, Alberta, VA, following the interment. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o Becky Hinkle, 1305 Flat Rock Road, Alberta, VA 23821; Alberta Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
