Mattie Gibson Lewis

Mattie Gibson Lewis, 94, a longtime resident of Emporia, VA, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2026, surrounded by her family where she was currently living in Lynchburg, VA.

Mattie was born June 19, 1931, daughter of the late John J. Gibson and Beulah Browder Gibson. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, R. Edward Lewis; brothers, John William “Bill” Gibson, E. Leroy Gibson, Sr., and Charles H. Gibson; and sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Crane, Edna Mae Whitby, and infant Peggy Gay Gibson.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen L. Carter and husband Scott of Forest, VA, and cherished granddaughter, J. Drew Carter and husband Aaron Da San Martino of Goldsboro, NC. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Ronald A. Gibson and wife Lea of Richmond, VA, nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mattie grew up on a farm in Brunswick County, VA, and after graduation from high school, moved to Richmond, VA, to attend Pan American Business School. Mattie retired as the executive secretary of the former Weldon Mill, a division of Belding Hausman Corporation. She was a long-time member of Monumental United Methodist Church in Emporia, VA, where she was active and served in multiple capacities within the church.

Mattie’s passing leaves a void in many hearts.

The family would like to thank Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their special care and love shown to Mattie.

Funeral services will be held at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA, at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 14, 2026. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
