Katherine Gibbs Mayton

Katherine Gibbs Mayton, age 93, a lifelong resident of Sutherland, VA, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

A daughter of the late James Henry Gibbs, Sr. and Alice Leibert Gibbs, she was the widow of John Wesley Mayton, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Forrest Mayton, and her siblings, Margaret M. Lewis, Carrie L. Gibbs, and James M. Gibbs, Jr.

Katherine was a member of Ocran United Methodist Church where she was very active until declining health. She enjoyed music and sang in the choir. She enjoyed the 100th Anniversary celebration, all the cookouts, and making homemade ice cream.

Katherine is survived by her granddaughter, Taylor “Danie” Mayton Barwick (Kyle); great-grandsons, Forrest and Sullivan “Sully”; daughter-in-law, Brenda Mayton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. The family wishes to extend special thanks to Barbara Jones for her unwavering friendship, love, and companionship through recent years in her life and to the staff at Colonial Heights Health Care and Heritage Hall for their care and love.

A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, April 16, 2026 at Ocran United Methodist Church, 20221 Cox Road, Sutherland, VA 23885. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 5:00 p.m.
