Joseph Nelson Mayton, Jr. “Joe,” passed away on November 23, 2024. He was born January 23, 1951 and was a resident of Dinwiddie County.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Nelson Mayton Sr. “Nelson,” his mother, Margie Rinker Mayton, his sister, Nancy Mayton Fisher, and his niece, Shannon Gill Sink.
He is survived by his son, Nelson Mayton (Amanda and Cecilia), his sister, Wanda Gill (Curtis), his sister, Donna Mayton, Mother to Nelson, Jo Carol Mayton, and his special girls, Daron Ferrell and Daniele Elliot, and their Families, a nephew, Curtis Gill (April), a niece, Tammy Taylor, as well as numerous great nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to the Cliborne and Orrell Families for their neighborly support over the years.
Joe attended Dinwiddie High School where he was a superior athlete and an all-star quarterback on Dinwiddie’s football team. He also played basketball and baseball in high school. Following high school, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army and went on to serve in the Vietnam War.
Joe spent the majority of his career working at R & H systems in Petersburg Virginia. In addition to his family, Joe’s passions in life were softball, hunting and golf. Joe was well known for competing in softball tournaments up and down the East Coast as well as golf tournaments in Southside Virginia. Anyone that knew him, knew that he was an avid outdoorsman. Joe will be best remembered by friends and loved ones for his colorful storytelling and sense of humor, and was a force to be reckoned with at a card table.
The family invites friends in the community to join them for fellowship on Sunday, December 8, 2024 from 3-5 pm at DeWitt-Rocky Run Ruritan Club, 14929 Glebe Road, DeWitt, VA 23840.
