Johnny McGuire Hammack, age 80, of Lawrenceville, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hunter McGuire Hammack and Fannie Mae Edwards Hammack, and two siblings, Perry Hammack and Shirley Wells.
Also affectionately known as Daddy, Daddy G, and—most importantly—Papa, Johnny will be remembered for the love he shared with his family and friends. He was devoted to taking care of his family and never met a stranger. He enjoyed telling stories of his childhood on the farm and having simple conversations with those he loved most. Anyone who knew Johnny would tell you he was one of the strongest, kindest men they ever knew.
He is survived by his daughters, Wendy Atkins and husband Brian (Margaret, Clay, and Anjelica), Angela Benidamou, and Karen Frazzetto and husband Pete; his grandchildren, Raven Miller (Curt Jones), Johnathan Bishop (Jessie Snead), Jax Atkins, and Michael Galicia (Charley Galicia); 7 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Linda Driver and Senetha Sopko. He is also survived by his companion of more than 50 years, who carried him through life when he couldn’t stand on his own, Peg-Leg Bob.
The family would like to extend special thanks and gratitude to Irene Gray, for giving Johnny the gift of 17 additional years when she saved his life; and to Donnie Edmonds for the love and support of Johnny and the family through life and through death.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2026 at James Square Baptist Church, 9440 Christanna Highway, Lawrenceville, VA 23868.
