John Bertie “Johnnie” Howerton, age 83, of Warfield, VA, formerly a longtime resident of Dinwiddie, passed away at his home on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Born in Rawlings, VA, he was the son of the late John Edward and Elsie Havens Howerton. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Kaufman Howerton.
Johnnie was a former member of Kenwood United Methodist Church but after moving to Warfield became a member of Antioch United Methodist Church. He enjoyed a long career in the retail grocery business. He was the former owner of Edgehill Supermarket, Ettrick Supermarket and Dinwiddie Corner Market which he was co-owner with his wife, Marilyn.
He enjoyed woodworking, being on his tractor, doing any outdoor activity, and loving on his dog “Oreo.” He will be fondly remembered as a hardworking man with a gentle soul, those big blue eyes, his beautiful hair, and his love for his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Cheryl Cheely Howerton; his children, Lisa Bunch (Steve), Tony Phillips (Karla), and Britney Kirby (Dennis); grandchildren, Lindsay Miller (Hucky), Taylor Bell (Cody), Ashton Phillips, Ben Phillips, Jaxson Phillips, Solie Phillips, Ezra Phillips, Emersen Kirby, Adelyn Kirby, Lucas Kirby, and Andrew Kirby; great-grandchildren, Turner Miller, John Lake Miller, Reese Miller, Camden Bell, and Whitley Bell; his brother, Chuck Howerton (Tammy), as well as a large extended family. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to his devoted caregiver, Carolyn Mullins and Amedysis Hospice.
A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2026 at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 1:30 p.m. The interment service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2026 at Southlawn Memorial Park, 1911 Birdsong Road, S. Prince George, VA 23805.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Antioch UMC, 17331 Boydton Plank Road, Warfield, VA 23889.
