James Mathew Smith, age 84, passed away Monday, November 3, 2025.
Born in Hertford, NC, he was the son of the late Roscoe Lee Smith and Swannie Bray Smith. He was also preceded in death by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara S. and James Pardo, and Bettie S. and Fred Alexander.
Jim served more than 35 years with the Virginia State Police. He served in numerous roles throughout his career, including Trooper, Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Applicant Investigator. He was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church in Appomattox, VA, as well as Warfield Baptist Church in Warfield, VA. He served in many ways, including Elder, Deacon, Usher, and Security. Jim loved his family and friends. He never met a stranger, and was well-loved and respected.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeannine K. Smith; two daughters, Lezlie S. Green and husband, Keith, and Amy S. Blaha and husband, David Jr. “Dee”; grandchildren, Colin M. Green and wife, Kristen, Brett Mathew Blaha, and Brady David Blaha; great grandson, Parker Hayes Green, as well as cherished nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2025 at Warfield Baptist Church, 7318 Flat Rock Road, Warfield, VA 23889, followed by interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m.
