James Lynn Peterson

James Lynn “Jimmy” Peterson, age 78, of Dinwiddie, VA, passed away Monday, October 26, 2026, at his home, where he was being cared for by his granddaughter, Crystal, and great-grandchildren, Robert “Chase” Whittaker and Summer Whittaker.

Born in Petersburg, VA, he was the son of the late Charles Lewis Peterson, Sr. and Estelle Rowlett Peterson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Billow Peterson; a brother, Charles “Bud” Peterson, Jr.; and a stepson, Ronnie Jones, Jr.

Jimmy retired after a long career as a firefighter for the Petersburg Department of Fire, Rescue, & Emergency Services. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman for most of his life. He also enjoyed photography for many years.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Lisa Peterson Mayo; a step-daughter, Tammie Allgood; a step-son, Tommy Reese; grandchildren, Corbin Mayo, Crystal Whittaker, Amber Horton, Jake Allgood, Joseph Allgood, Thomas Jones, Cameron Jones, Sadie Jones, and Heather Mitchell, 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Gary Peterson and wife, Carol, and Keith Peterson and wife, Heide; a sister, Priscilla Mason, a sister-in-law, Jeanette Peterson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2026, at Smyrna Baptist Church 18971 Carson Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841.
