Ivan McDowell "Butter" Butterworth, Jr.

Ivan McDowell “Butter” Butterworth, Jr., age 75, a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie County, VA, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan McDowell “Mac” Butterworth, Sr. and Eva Courtney Butterworth; and his sister, Courtney Hicks.

Butter was a dedicated farmer his entire life, and a spirited alumnus of the North Carolina State University. Even after he retired, he was always busy showing his love in acts of service, and always went the extra mile for those he loved. He found particular joy and fulfillment in being Grandpa B, as well as being chief gardener and manicurist for his yards. Butter’s lawnmower was considered off-limits to others, and his yards were his personal domain. Entertaining friends and family was high on the list of pleasurable events, especially if it meant having a good meal. Rock ‘n’ roll concerts were favorites and often led to exciting travels, but he found peace and solitude at his home in the Outer Banks. Loving, thoughtful, romantic, and sentimental described him well. He will always be remembered as the special man he was. Go Wolfpack!

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte J. Ragsdale; his daughters, Jo Catherine Devine and her husband, Jason, and Brittany Robin and her husband, Andrew; grandchildren, Alex and Julia; and a niece, Ellen Hicks.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026 at The Butterworth Family Cemetery, Butterworth, VA.
