Emma Sue Steed Baker

Emma Sue Steed Baker, 87, of Meredithville, VA, passed Wednesday, June 10, 2026. Mrs. Baker was the daughter of the late Virginia T. and Edward P. “Ned” Steed and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Joe Clyde Baker; her sister, Frances Steed Bacon (Richard); and brother-in-law Frank Meredith Baker (Martha). She is survived by her brothers-in-law W.G. Baker, Jr. (Mary Lee) and John Dabney Baker (Linda); her loving nieces and nephews and their families; and a dear friend, Bernadette Gunn.

Sue graduated from Lawrenceville High School, attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, and worked as a secretary for Burlington Industries in South Hill until she decided to devote herself to husband, home, church, and extended family. She enjoyed nature and being outside to garden both flowers and vegetables and feeding the birds. Other pleasures involved cooking, baking, canning, and freezing, while using her talents knitting and crocheting special gifts for loved ones.

Mrs. Baker was a lifelong member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where she faithfully served until declining health prevented her attendance. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday June 13, at 11:00 in Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, VA with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Park, La Crosse, VA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 202 West High St, South Hill, VA 23970.
