Doris Mae Overby, born May 1,1931 passed away on July 23, 2026 in Conway, South Carolina. She is survived by her son Stuart Overby, daughter-in-law Brenda Overby, grandchildren Karen Overby Farnsworth (Scott), Ryan Overby (Jordan), and Kevin Overby (Erin), and great-grandchildren Carter Farnsworth (11), Dylan Farnsworth (9) and Connor Overby (3 months) and several great nieces/nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brother Morris Overby, Father George Overby, Mother Allie Mae Overby and multiple cousins and nieces.
Doris joined First Baptist Conway (FBC) Gracepoint Church when she moved to South Carolina in 2021 and was a former member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Virginia. She grew up in South Hill, VA and lived most of her life in the neighboring Lawrenceville, VA area, where she leaves close friends. Before retiring in 1995, Doris was an expert seamstress at Virginia clothing factories her entire career, with an eye for quality assurance and an interest in helping other workers learn the craft.
A single Mom at 20 years old, Doris focused her early years on providing for her son. She did not have an easy life but always had a heart to help neighbors and friends however she could. In her mind, their needs came before hers. Doris was a strong woman with a sharp mind and an uncanny memory for details all her life. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed the simple things in life— visiting with friends and family, worshiping in church, eating a good piece of fried chicken, playing cards, and feeding hummingbirds each spring.
The family wants to thank individual caregiver Heather, and all the staff at McLeod Hospice, especially Katie Marshall, Hope Nichols and Leah Howell, for their caring and excellent support throughout Mom’s last month.
Funeral services will be conducted at Williams Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, VA on Monday, August 3 at 2 PM with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior at 1 PM.
In addition, a celebration of life service for Doris will be held at FBC GracePoint Church in Conway, SC, on Wednesday August 5 at 11 AM. The family will receive friends one hour prior at 10 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lawrenceville Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, VA, FBC GracePoint Church in Conway, SC or McLeod Hospice, headquartered in Florence, SC.
