Charles Abernathy Rainey, Jr.

Charles Abernathy Rainey, Jr., age 77, a lifelong resident of Dinwiddie, VA, and beloved member of his community, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021. He was one of three children born to the late Charles Abernathy and Page Sawyer Rainey. Charles was a member of the first graduating class of Richard Bland College. He completed his education at the MCV School of Pharmacy, graduating in 1966. Soon after graduation, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served proudly for three years. Following his military service, Charles returned to Dinwiddie County to work as a Pharmacist at Dinwiddie Drug Store. In 1991, he became owner of the store, and continued to operate it until his retirement in 2018. Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judy Townsend Rainey; daughters, Allison Leigh Rainey and Stephen Wood, and Austin Rainey Hudson and husband, Jason; grandchildren, Sydney Ann Hudson and Tucker Grey Hudson; sister, Mary Rainey Chappell and husband, Earl; brother, Donald Rainey and wife, Beverley. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Western Heights Baptist Church, 24416 Cox Road, N. Dinwiddie, VA 23803 followed by interment at the Rainey Family Cemetery in Dinwiddie. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, also at the church. The service will be live streamed on the Western Heights Baptist Church Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rocky Run Athletic Association c/o David Bunch, 19515 Courthouse Road, Dinwiddie, VA 23841.
